Body Position Basics

Learn the simple head, hip, and kick cues that keep freestyle from feeling like swimming uphill.

Why body position matters

A swimmer who feels like they are dragging their legs usually does not need to kick harder first. They need a better line in the water. Good body position lets the head, ribs, hips, and kick work together instead of fighting each other.

Cues to try first

  • Look down and slightly forward instead of lifting the face toward the wall.
  • Press the chest gently into the water so the hips can ride higher.
  • Keep the kick narrow and quiet enough that it supports the line instead of splashing behind you.

Simple pool set

Swim 6x25 freestyle with 20 seconds rest. On odd lengths, exaggerate a quiet head and tall spine. On even lengths, swim normally while keeping the same body line.
